Divergent Character Analysis - 1518 Words

In this day and age, society appears to be a man’s world. From the differences in the average salary, to basic, everyday treatment, men reap the benefits. In the novel Divergent, the author, Veronica Roth, develops strong female roles in order to defy and oppose common gender roles and stereotypes and to highlight the flaws in this seemingly perfect futuristic society. Divergent takes place in Chicago in the far future. In this novel, the society is divided into factions: Abnegation, Candor, Erudite, Amity, and Dauntless, each faction focusing on specific human traits. In the minds of most, one specific faction will directly correlate with their own values, but in the case of Tris Prior, one lone faction does not fit her needs. The author†¦show more content†¦This is symbolic of combating female oppression, taking advantage of their weaker physical attributes. This competition drives Tris to combat her weakness and strive to make it through the demanding process of initiation, symbolizing breaking through of the â€Å"glass ceiling† which inhibits the ability of women to advance. â€Å" She wants to rip me to pieces. I cant lie down in submission now. I have become an attack dog too† (Roth 358 ). Through the novel, as Tris begins to prove to herself and others that she has strength, other people begin to see her as a threat, seeing that she is a girl thriving in a faction dominated by male qualities. On page 279 , Al, Peter, and Drew, fellow initiates of Tris, are having a hard time letting a small girl, once from Abnegation, beat them in the initiation training competition and they decide to take matters into their own hands. These strong male figures can not bear to have a girl out rank them. To them, the only way to solve this problem is to dispose of Tris, instead of rising to the occasion and working harder to reclaim their dominant positions. By starting out weak and facing her challenges, she grows to be stronger and more confident than the boys who are physically Thompson 3 stronger.
